With the redesign of the San Jose Earthquakes Crest I was inspired, and asked, to redesign the Timbers Crest. I started off with looking at important images and symbols of Portland. This first led me to the Flag and Crest of Portland.
The City of Portland's Crest utilizes a round shape that has also been used as the basis for almost all of the Timbers crest. I started with this shape taking the bold outlines as the beginning of my redesign. I then took the yellow and green from the flag of Portland for the logo's color palette. This formed the basis of the new design.
Next I incorporated three main elements of the Timbers graphic identity over the years. The axe, the chevrons and the wordmark. The four chevrons represent the four previous versions of the Timbers Crest.
Next I added a Portland wordmark, some accents on the axe to make it less flat and an EST 1975 on the handle of the axe to pay respect to the long and storied history of the Timbers. I also made a red version as the timbers have used a red version of their crest before.
